    Description

For your consideration is a FABULOUS DINNER PLATE BY TATSUZO SHIMAOKA (1911 - 2007).  It has a very nice Jamon Zogan rope impressed pattern which, in this example, is quite complex.  The border consists of a series of repeated 6 dot groups that may represent seed pods or perhaps flowers.  These have a Herringbone rope impression pattern underneath.  The center well has a pattern I refer to as Carpenter's Cloth.  Superimposed over this are  3 tenmoku plum blossom motifs  These are some of Shimaoka's most frequently use rope impressed patterns. This plate was originally purchased in 1983 directly from Shimaoka at his studio by Tracy Whiteside, a potter visiting Japan.  There are no chips or cracks.  It is signed with his later cypher that has a curved tail. The box lid is also signed
    .
This is a fairly large piece at 9 1/4" (23.5 cm) Diameter x 1 1/2" (3.8 cm) Height.  (Photos 5 - 12 are some other listings showing work by Shimaoka, David Leach and David Cuzick).   (C - #4)
