Description
For your consideration is a FABULOUS DINNER PLATE BY TATSUZO SHIMAOKA (1911 - 2007). It has a very complex pattern with multiple Jamon Zogan rope impressed patterns which, in this example, I refer to as Herringbone around the rim in a cream/ brown color and a similar color in the center well of Curved Perpetual Diagonal background. The exact center has a medallion with a pattern I refer to as Carpenter's Cloth. These are 3 of Shimaoka's most frequently use rope impression patterns. Superimposed over the the entire plate's surface are 6 alternating Plum Blossom motifs in a temmoku iron color. This plate was originally purchased in 1983 directly from Shimaoka at his studio by Tracy Whiteside, a potter visiting Japan. There are no chips or cracks. It is signed with his later cypher that has a curved tail. The box lid is also signed.
This is a fairly large piece at 9 1/4" (23.5 cm) Diameter x 1 1/2" (3.8 cm) Height. (Photos 6 - 12 are some other listings showing work by Shimaoka, David Leach and David Cuzick). (C - #2)
