Because of the polar bear finial, the skaters and skiers on the lid, and the fishing, farming, logging, fjord sailing, Viking longboat, and harbor side industry scenes around the sides, we know this must be a memento of Norway. The acanthus scroll decorations and its four ball and the claw feet are other strong hints of it's origin.

Tarnish tells us this might be silver or other bright plate over some heavy metal - we'd guess pewter or similar. Unfortunately the lid hinge is broken so it no longer tilts up, yet it still nests comfortably and sits securely when place on top.
