Norwegian folk art box from the 1920s.
Oval bentwood box or tine form, with lapped and glued sides. Two spring pins clasp the top in place with an arch handle on top.
The initials "E. H." are rosemaled in fancy script on the front.
The original owners told us that E.H. was Esta Hanson. Her fiance bought the box during a trip to Oslo Norway in 1923, and brought it to America as a gift for her.
Very pretty flowers and vines painted decoration all around the bentwood sides and on the lid. Body color is probably the most common used in Norwegian rosemaling along with yellow white, blue, green and brown. Nicely varnished with a soft velvety sheen. Pegs or sometimes called 'ears' are rounded and decorated down their length.
Lid is tight due to aging of the wood box and should only be removed and replaced with care so as not to stress the pins too much.
No chips, cracks, breaks, or scratches seen, only minor wear from age and handling.
