Description
DescriptionHere is a nice late 19th century whaler's hooked flensing knife in good original condition. The surface has a nice patina from age with a shaped wooden handle. The large blade has a nice shape and is very sharp with a blubber hook on the top of the blade. Originally from Leith docks, Edinburgh Scotland from a maritime naval collection. Believed to have been used by the Edinburgh Whale & Fish Company established in 1749. For reference the 19th century black and white photo I have added shows a whaler using a similar hooked flensing knife on the deck of a whaling ship in the Arctic from the Keasbury-Gordon Photograph Archive. In total measuring 15.3 inches long and the blade measures 9.2 inches long.
