    Description

EARLY ANTIQUE 1760-1800 COLONIAL PERIOD "SLIDING" CANDLE HOLDER W/SCARCE ORIGINAL HANGING HOOK, "Hogscraper"
    D
    ESCRIPTION:
Scans show it all.....VERY RARE, early antique colonial period large "sliding" candle holder from my collection. Also was known at the time as a "hogscraper". Very substantial and is made of sheet steel. Measures about 6 1/2" tall x 4" diameter at the base. This has great lines, and really reflects its early age and period.
THIS IS PARTICULARLY RARE, AS IT STILL HAS THE ORIGINAL HANGING HOOK. These were most often broken off as they got in the way when used as a hogscraper to remove animal hair.
This was made to hold a candle inside the "tube" of the holder. Has a movable or sliding "pedestal" inside the tube on which the candle rests. As it burns, it can be slid up about 2 1/2" using the lever shown to expose more of the candle. Sliding tab and spring on this work well and smoothly. It is a great looking, early, functional design and item!! A CLASSIC LOOK AND A GREAT EARLY DECORATOR. A GREAT PIECE OF PRIMITIVE AMERICANA.
These are often called "hogscrapers" as they were used for 2 purposes, IN TRUE YANKEE SPIRIT!! In addition to holding candles, they were used to "scrape" the hides of hogs to remove the thick, tough hair on them. They would hold it by the shaft, upside down, and use the sharp round base edge as the scraper. Very tough, sharp metal, and it performed the function quite well! This is why the top tab is usually missing......it could cut your hand badly if the tool slipped, so it was often removed. UNLIKE MOST THAT ARE FOUND TODAY, THIS ONE IS NOT MISSING THE TOP TAB!!! Looks just like the day it was made!!!
Great aged appearance and patina. Has an even surface and patina, giving it a nice early look. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND THESE TODAY, ESPECIALLY IN COMPLETE CONDITION LIKE THIS ONE!!!
This can be used as a functional item or as a nice original early antique colonial decorative item. It is an actual early colonial piece, and I would estimate it was made no later than 1770 - 1800.
Really looks the part. Would look great displayed on an early desk or on an early kitchen or dining room shelf.
It is in nice original condition overall as described and shows age, patina, and use well. Great early body, decorative lines, base, and surface finish.
This was part of a very  early antique lighting collection from a local New England estate.
