Only Known “Key” Matching Animation Drawings Original Art (Plane Crazy, Ub Iwerks, 1928)
There is no character more highly regarded globally than the beloved Mickey Mouse: Here it is... The only known, surfaced Key-Frame Animation Drawings matching set from Plane Crazy (1928), the undisputed king of animation Grails. It features the first appearance of Mickey Mouse, the drawing and release pre-dates Steamboat Willie, and was released as a silent cartoon for a test audience. This particular drawing was done by Walt Disney's partner and lead animator at the time, Ub Iwerks and is a rare keyframe matching two piece drawing. What make this even more rare and desirable is the Ub Iwerks own notation on drawing #300, outlining this as the opening scene and would be used as reference point for the next 30 drawings (301-330) as noted on the piece (Mickey and Minnie in the plane). Essentially, meaning this is the main drawing drawing for the sequence, no other drawing has surfaced with such importance to Mickey’s first appearance.
There have been less than 50 authentic original drawings from Plane Crazy that have come to market (auction sources) and none have had any notations or outlines by none other than Ub Iwerks for future drawings, making it a "Key-Frame", otherwise known as a key animation drawing. The only other known focal piece with the first appearance of Mickey with specific notes by Ub Iwerks are the infamous original Plane Crazy storyboards outlining the story and Mickey Mouse, which was donated to the Library of Congress years ago and at the time of donation were valued in the Millions. Hard to put a price on this, but we’re reluctantly listing at this time to see if there’s any interest in such a rare and remarkable piece of Disney history. Certainly for the discerning Mickey Mouse collector who only wants the best.
