Description

Antique one piece wood rolling pin from Mockhorn Island Eastern Shore of Virginia. Several pieces were in descendants of Robert B. Andrews family and have just become available. Robert B. Andrews was a U. S. Life Saving Service crewman on Smith Island in 1897 and a decoy carver.
Mockhorn Island was home to a small hunt club built by Nathan Cobb, Jr. in 1852. Later, Larimer Cushman bought the island in 1902 and retired there in the 1920s with his wife. He built a large lodge connected to the original and many out buildings including barns, and cooling houses plus a concrete sea wall and flood gates to protect the island. There were workers who tended the livestock and caretakers to look after the grasses and plants. It was privately owned until the second owner, T.A.D. Jones died in 1959 and then the state assumed ownership. Jones was a government contractor who often entertained high-ranking military officers and politicians at his island. The hunt clubs provided jobs to locals in the way of guides to the sportsmen.
Condition is very good. One of the descendants cleaned the rolling pin and oiled it, but there are still remnants of dough stuck in the cracks here and there as seen in 2nd photo. Measures about 16 inches long.
