    Description

Two original Walt Disney animation production cels sealed in Original Matt as sold at the
Disneyland Art Corner c. 1962 with Art Corner Gold Label authentication on back . . .
First Cel, Donald Duck as Caveman, from:
    "DONALD AND THE WHEEL"
    - 17 minute Cartoon Featurette
Released June 21, 1961 to Theaters along with Disney's "The Parent Trap" feature
    Second Disney Cel features:
    LARGE ORANGE JUICE WITH STRAW
(From Disney TV Commercial Not related to "Donald and the Wheel")
Two genuine Disney animation cels still sealed inside the Disneyland Art Corner matte in which Disney originally sold them. The original Disneyland Art Corner Gold Label remains affixed to the back of the matte. Disney used this variety of Disneyland Art Corner Gold Labels from 1962 through 1965.
The first cel is of "Caveman" Donald Duck a 3¼ inch high image of Donald from the 17 minute Disney animation featurette, "Donald and the Wheel," released in theaters on June 21, 1961 as the companion cartoon with Disney's feature length movie, "The Parent Trap," released the same day. The second cel is also a genuine Disney animation cel -- production artwork of a large glass of orange juice with a straw and not part of "Donald and the Wheel." Rather. it was part of a commercial on Disney's TV show. Yes, that's how they sold them combined at Disneyland.
The few known similar Caveman Donald cels from the 1961 "Donald and the Wheel" featurette occupy only half of the image space available in a standard Disneyland Art Corner matte. Our research has found that to fill the other half of the matte space, those preparing these cels for Art Corner sale added another Disney cel to occupy the unfilled viewable space. We have located only a very few pictures as examples, but found a similar Caveman Donald Duck cel that sold on-line some time ago with a very small Jiminy Cricket cel where the Orange Juice Glass cel is placed in this offering. Sometime after that cel was sold, Van Eaton Galleries sold a nearly identical Caveman Donald Duck cel without an additional Disney cel with it. Caveman Donald cels are quite scarce.
Similar images of "Caveman" Donald have appeared on postage stamps worldwide including a set of stamps issued in 1995 by the Maldives Islands (Scott Catalog #2051-2058) to commemorate the 1994 50th Anniversary of Donald Duck.  "Caveman" Donald was also used in Icygeek's "Disney Magic: the Gathering" card game (such as "Caveduck , Legendary Creature Duck Barbarian"),, and in many popular GIF format background screen savers.  Here, however, are not such mere imitations, but two original hand-painted production art cels with provenance tracing them back to Disney.
Again, these two cels are sealed together inside the matt as originally sold 60 years ago at Disneyland's Art Corner. The scans are of the actual item (the last scan is a promotional piece for the release of the "Donand and the Wheel" featurette and not included in this lot). You can judge the condition yourself. While the Orange Juice Glass cel has a value of its own as an authentic Disney cel used during a commercial on a Disney broadcast, by itself it does not have the value of Caveman Donald. We do not recommend opening up the 10" x 12" matted package to separate one cel from another as apparently Van Eaton did a few years ago. The Disneyland Art Corner's Gold Label affixed to the back of the matted package is of the type used by the Art Corner from 1962 to 1965 and authenticates both of the cels. You would have only one label, but two separate animation Disney cels.
