Description

Just in time for Saturday's game! RI Aviation Hall of Fame is benefiting from the sale of a collection of Army-Navy football artifacts. A large number of collectibles from this great rivalry will be posted here this week.
This blanket was purchased about 20 years ago from an Annapolis, MD estate, about two blocks from the Naval Academy. The home from which this blanket was purchased is reportedly where
the song "Anchors Aweigh" was written.
Our donor bought the blanket from an Annapolis dealer in 2006.
This blanket was found in a hall closet where it had been stored for many years. It is an original 1934 game blanket for the Army-Navy game, and it is quite large, measuring about 69" x 74".
This is the game where the famous Slade Cutter kicked a 1st quarter field goal, winning the game and breaking Navy's 10 game losing streak against Army. CDR Cutter went on to become a WW2 hero by commanding the submarine
USS Seahorse that sank 19 Japanese ships. He was awarded four Navy Crosses.  The name
J.N. Wilson
is stitched to the blanket in the lower left corner area.
The blanket is thick and heavy blue fabric, like an old horse blanket. It is not cheap felt. It is a thick woven cotton fabric. The letters are yellow felt stitched to the blanket. The huge Navy "N" is made from a thick puffy material that rises off the blue fabric, like a very large varsity letter. The blanket has yellow edge piping all around, and features one gold start, signifying a Navy victory over Army.
The blanket is in fine condition for its age, with very little if any moth damage. The fabric is still supple and thick. It does not have a musty odor. The letters are firmly sewn on. The large Navy "N" does show a bit of loosening/fraying at the letter's edge in a couple of spots, but it is still solidly affixed (see photos).
The blanket has a frayed maker's label which reads "Champion Knitwear Mills, Rochester, NY." This company is now known as the major sports supplier Champion.
This is a great Naval Academy estate find from Annapolis. It is not a reproduction. It has not been passed around from dealer to dealer.
This is a neat vintage item, an  85-year-old memento of one of the most historic rivalries in sports. Buyer pays .00 shipping which includes insurance. Shipping combined on multiple lots whenever possible. Thanks for your purchases!
A similar football blanket from 1963 sold here on eBay in 2015 for 0, and this blanket is 30 years older!
